National Bonsai and Penjing Collection of Australia

What is the National Bonsai and Penjing Collection?

A collection of miniature trees.

The National Bonsai and Penjing Collection of Australia (NPBCA) is the newest of the national Collections in Canberra. It showcases some of the highest quality miniature trees produced in Australia by Australian artists.
It is a permanent Collection that is open year-round (with some minor exceptions). See ‘Home page’ on website for current information (http://www.cbs.org.au/NBPCA/Index.htm).

A joint venture between ACT Government and the bonsai community of Australia

Following the severe bushfires in Canberra in 2003, the ACT Government initiated development of the new National Arboretum Canberra to replace areas of burnt out pine forest near the city. The first ‘Garden’ at the Arboretum is the NBPCA. The Collection consists of trees that have been donated and are fully owned by the ACT Government, plus trees that have been loaned by artists. The latter are generally on show for 12-36 months. The Collection is a joint project between the ACT Government and the bonsai community of Australia. A Bonsai Management Committee provides the link between these partners (see www.cbs.org.au/NBPCA/Contact)
